Environmental management systems (EMS) can be used by organisations to help them reduce their environmental impacts, comply with relevant legislation and manage environmental risks.
General information on EMS has been provided by Defra
Envirowise has produced “How to” guidance to help you implement an EMS.
More specific information on EMS can be found at:
ISO 14001 Environment - ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard that sets out how you can go about putting in place an effective EMS.
BS 8555 STEMS – this scheme allows you to phase the management system in and assess how you’re performing at each step on the path. Once completed, it still results in achieving ISO 14001 certification.
Eco-Management and Audit Scheme - Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary EU initiative designed to improve a company´s environmental performance. To achieve EMAS, organisations need to be legally compliant, run an environmental management system and report on their environmental performance through the publication of an independently verified (by a third party) environmental statement. See also European Commission EMAS site and BSI site.
IEMA Acorn Scheme - The IEMA Acorn Scheme, an officially recognised EMS standard recommended by the government, offers accredited recognition for organisations evaluating and improving their environmental performance through the phased implementation of an environmental management system (EMS).
Accredited Certification Bodies
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) maintains a register of accredited Certification Bodies that can assess your organisation´s management systems.
